Al Capone's Cadillac

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Came across an old 1930′s magazine today in some junk – it was about Al Capone’s
armour-plated 1928 Cadillac – sounded like quite an impressive vehicle! Weighed
about twice a normal caddy – even had bulet proof tires…
It seems when he was jailed – the car was confiscated & taken around the world
(or at least to here in England) & put on display…
Anyone know what happened to it?

Fortunately, the almost universal status of the chevy engines makes it easy
to up the proformance.  Just keep the bits you take off.

39 DODGE cheap-worth anything?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

I have the opportunity to purchase a 39 Dodge 4 dr sedan.  This
car seems to be fairly complete, but would need full restoration.
It is supposed to be in running condition.  I found out about it
from a friend who has been living on the same property as its
owner.  The catch is that they are being evicted, which is why
the owner will sell it for a couple hundred bucks.  If he doesnt
sell it in the next couple of days, he is just going to leave it
for the new owners of the property.  Would it be worth buying?

Thanks in advance for your help!

65 Corvair Convertible va

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

To: ALL
Subject: 65 Corvair Convertible value?

I was looking at a 65 Corvair convertible at a local dealer.

It’s in decent but not great shape — a tear in a seat, a patch in the
roof, missing hubcap, some scraped paint, a little noise from the
lifters. But it runs well, has no dents, hasn’t been wrecked, and passed
state inspection including emissions.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew (1) what kind of value this car
might have, at least a range? and (2) how hard is it to get repair parts
for a car like this?

Thanks,
  dennya

Re: 52 Chevy/ Woodgraining

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Last year at the IOLA car show I watched a display from a vendor demonstrating his
technique for woodgraining.  He had taken samples of lumber woodgrain and
made photo copies of the grain.  (apparently laying the boards or lumber samples
on a Copy machine).  He then used a rubber roller coated with some kind of thinner
and rolled the roller acrossed the printed sheet of paper.  This lifted the wood
grain off of the paper and placed it on the roller.  He then applied the roller
acrossed a prepared portion of a dash and the grain went onto the surface perfectly.

I did not get to talk to him but I heard him say that after the ink stabilized again,
you could seal the surface with a lacquer clear to make it permenant.  I have
not tried this but it looked fairly simple and the results were great.

P.S. he also used different size rollers to get different results.

Hope this helps a bit.

60 Olds S88

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

I have a chance to buy a ’60 Olds, Super 88, 2Dr Hdtp, Auto Trans, 394 c.i.
While it is rough, it is driveable.  Has 87K + on odometer, but do not know
if it is rolled over?  Rough = moderate rust, padded dash gone, needs new
carpet, some glass, rechroming.  Any idea/opinions as to a fair price?

Voltage Levels, 6 and 12 volts..

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

What I am wondering is what exactly is the nominal voltage on a charged
battery, through what voltage range is it charging, and how much is too much
voltage.  I have an idea of the ballpark range for a 12 volt system, but
am curious to know a little better than ballpark if anyone can help.

For a 6 volt system, do you just take all of the 12 volt numbers and divide
them in half?  This is primarily what I am interested in because I want to
make sure my generator is not overcharging my battery in my ’33 Dodge, which
has ( of course ) a 6 volt system.

The main reason I am asking is that I am going to make myself a small
diagnostic tool that I can stash under my ’33 dash ( and also one for my
motorcycle ) that has a few LED’s to indicate what range the system voltage
is currently in, and I would rather not guess on where to put the cutoff
voltages.  In my mind this would be easier to use than a gauge because
all you usually care about is what range it is in, not the exact voltage
( especially if the ranges are well chosen ), not to mention that I have
nowhere to mount a big gauge ( due to size on mc, preference on ’33 ).

Anyone?

Smogging 72 Camaro

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

I was wondering exactly how much work would go into smogging a 72 Camaro
in California.  A co-worker is selling the car.  However, at the moment,
it is not California street-legal.  It is currently equip with headers
that are not Cal-legal.  Also, the headers need a spot weld on the lower
pipes.  Also, the car is equiped with a after-market intake manifold and
carb.  The engine, I believe is rebuilt, equipped with a performance
cam.  Adjustable air shocks in the rear, a relatively new paint job, and
a clean body.

I need to know exactly what I need to do in order to make this car street-
legal and able to pass smog.  I also was wondering how much would one pay
for a car like this.  Blue book is about 1500-1700, but he told me he
would go lower, depending on what he needed to do to the car before I
bought it.

Thanks in advance!

FOR SALE: 1963 Mercury Comet

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

My father-in-law would like to sell the following car.

    1963 Mercury Comet
    20K miles from new (genuine)

The car is in original condition except for some minor bodywork damage
to the passenger side. His mother bought it new and it was
later driven by my wife and her sister.

My wife describes it as being a Champagne (sparkling beige) colour.

For the last ten (since ’83 I think) years it has been sitting in a
    garage and has not moved.
Apart from a thick layer of dust it is in the same condition as
when it was stored. Probably an easy restauration project.

The car is located in Petoskey, Michigan and would have to be
    collected.

    The price is negotiable.

Please email me if you are interested.
